2009 NRL Channel Nine coverage worth a peek
December 19th 2008 07:31
Sydney based NRL clubs will once again feature heavily in free to air television in the first 15 matches of the 2009 season.
Reigning Premiers the Manly Sea Eagles, the Sydney Roosters, St George Illawarra Dragons and the Parramatta Eels are the main teams from Sydney heartland to gain regular gigs on Channel Nine.
Despite the loss of star centre Mark Gasnier, St George will feature in four of the first five Friday night matches, along with rivals the Sydney Roosters.
The Eels will feature in three of the opening five weekends, the same number as Manly.
Cronulla on the other hand have been left out in the cold to the regular viewing public, with only one game against the Dragons scheduled for free to air viewing.
As for the other NRL teams, the Brisbane Broncos will once again find themselves in the middle of consistent free to air viewing, scoring four of the five opening matches on the Nine network as well.
The Canberra Raiders on the other hand, who finished sixth in regular competition in 2008, will not feature in any of the opening 15 games of the NRL premiership season on Channel Nine.
Fox Sports will once again run most of their games.
Teams such as the Cowboys, Penrith, Tigers, Bulldogs and Titans will too have limited time on free to air, that is of course if they perform below standard.
If sides such as the Bulldogs, Tigers, Titans and Cowboys get a roll on in season 2009 however, Channel Nine coverage usually follows.
The opening Friday night match of the 2009 NRL season will see the Melbourne Storm go head to head against the Dragons.
The Sunday afternoon game will see traditional rivals the Sydney Roosters host the Rabbitohs in what should be another enthralling affair.
