Bennett and Dragons to feel the heat

December 3rd 2008 07:36

Its the sight no Brisbane Broncos fan thought they would ever witness - Wayne Bennett in Wollongong, wearing a Dragons singlet, beginning to plot ways on how to destroy the 15 other NRL teams in his way for an elusive Dragons premiership.

Ironically enough, it all begins against Brisbane in round 1 next season.

The stage is now set for Bennett to triumph in League heartland.

The pressure on his shoulders will be enormous considering the reputation he brings with him down south. The difference in success between Bennet and his predecessor, Nathan Brown are huge.

But what comes with six first grade premierships with the Broncos is a Dragons board that will demand results immediately.

Despite the loss of star centre Mark Gasnier to French Rugby, Dragons CEO Peter Doust is casting his line long in hope that Bennett can deliver long suffering Dragons fans a premiership.

Of course, Bennett is no stranger to success and that’s why Dragons fans have reason to fill optimistic come 2009.

In his time with the Broncos, Bennett was to Brisbane what Sir Alex Ferguson still is to Manchester United.

Both are leaders of the highest order who have brought forth fortune to their respective clubs, which in turn has provided both individuals with the ability to yield their wands without any hindrance.

For an NRL club as inconsistent as St George Illawarra, gaining Bennett's signature was a no brainier, despite the fact he is from Queensland.

After acquiring the services of the most influential coach in the competition, its up to the players themselves to stand up and breath in the experience and knowledge that comes with Bennett's prior appointments as Kangaroos and QLD coach.

Players such as Ben Creagh, Dean Young, Ben Hornby, Matt Cooper and Wendell Sailor have to take charge and respond to the positive aura that Bennett will emit next season.

If they don't, not even Bennett's reputation for garnering premierships every three or so years will save the Dragons from another disappointing 2009 campaign.
