Buderus stands tall against adversity
July 4th 2008 08:55
As slick as he is out of dummy half, Danny Buderus could not hide his disappointment as NSW crumbled to a third straight series loss.
Prior to the national anthem being played, Buderus came to realise this was a moment to saviour no matter how bittersweet it would turn out to be.
By the look on his eyes, the Newcastle great gave the impression he wasn't going anywhere until his side emerged victorious and the shield is in his arms before 76,000 Blues faithful.
One of the most active players to ever set foot in the NRL let alone Origin, Buderus ignored all the hype surrounding his departure from the pinnacle of rugby league and knucked down to the floor attempting to snoop Origin supremacy from QLD.
Eighty minutes later, Buderus along with 16 other dreaded souls wonder how another shield got away.
While his intentions were clear, Buderus couldn't break a Maroons side filled with skill, class and anything that comes with claiming three straight series victories.
The dressing room resembled a funeral as if Buderus himself was the one getting lowered. Blues players from all over sober, realising the fact there will be no tomorrow for the man they call 'Bedsy'.
But like the tremendous captain he is, Buderus stepped up, his eyes blazing with disappointment yet filled with joy.
As the words escaped his mouth, the former Australian hooker compelled all who stood near him. His heart lit with envy as he addressed his troops, congratulating them for their efforts in an Origin decider worth remembering.
Buderus finally pulled the trigger on what was arguably his toughest speech. Nothing was left to tell as the empty feeling of a QLD victory sunk in.
Although Buderus leaves the Blues with the Maroons firmly in business, the game of Origin will never stop.
While not one to bluff for fame, Buderus will leave Australia hoping his desire for success has squeezed it's hands on the rest of his teammates.
He'll hope every Blue that suffered this difficult setback will come out all guns blazing until nothing remains.
For it is then the Blues and Buderus will find true peace.
Despite the Origin setback, the Knights captain has nine remaining NRL games to play before his time here is done.
While an Origin series win is priceless, Buderus will now bleed for his beloved Newcastle knowing full well his time at the Hunter is slowly creeping away.
As 20,000 Novacastrians scream as loud as their mouths possibly allow, Buderus will feel the parrallels of emotion experienced by his former legendary leader, Andrew Johns.
The desire and passion that flows in Buderus is matched by few. His presence alone makes those alongside him with no voice finally start barking.
For those that have witnessed his tenacity for success will tell you the same thing.
With no hesitation, Buderus will now run out against the Dragons and straight shoot Newcastle's ambitions for a finals birth.
Because for 'Bedsy' there has ever been only one way forward.
