Fitzgibbon not done with yet
May 3rd 2008 08:22
Craig Fitzgibbon never seems to run out of gas.
His performance against City last night clearly showed the NSW selectors that there is still plenty of quality in those 31 year old legs of his.
Fitzgibbon has shown throughout the years that he is as versatile as any forward running in the NRL.
He has played Lock, Second Row and Prop with great aplomb for the Roosters, NSW and Australia.
Add to this his incredible goalkicking skills and you have yourself one handy player.
But there has always been one quality of Fitzgibbon's game that has never seemed to deterioate. His endurance.
Besides Nathan Hindmarsh, not many can come up with the power and defence of Fitzgibbon and hold it up for the full 80 minutes.
He plays the game as if it were his last and needs to be rewarded for his efforts.
This year, NSW are in supreme danger of losing aura in the Origin series.
Queensland now look the dominant force in the intense interstate rivalry. The depth they have in the backs is astonishing with the likes of Inglis, Falou, Slater and Bowen all eager to put on a Maroon jersey.
And it doesn't end there.
Queensland also have the dominant choices in terms of playmakers with the likes of Cronk, Lockyer, Thurston and Prince. Cooper Cronk in particular is the fourth choice in QLD but he would be a starter in NSW no questions asked hence their awsome depth.
The only area where NSW can really assert themselves is in the frontrow.
The likes of Mason, Hoffman, Tupou and Gallen provide the Blues with a superior advantage in terms of skill and power in the forwards.
If the selectors were to increase this advantage, Fitzgibbon needs to be included in the squad.
He has never failed in the representative arena and this was proved in 2004 when he eventually won the representative player of the year award after such a dominant Origin in which NSW reigned supreme.
He his a leader and a warrior of the highest calibre and really looks set to produce one last supreme effort if NSW need him to help wrestle back Origin dominance.
For NSW sake i hope they do not overlook him.
