Gasnier returns, Dragon's last chance

April 25th 2008 00:19
Gasnier's return on Anzac Day is pivotal to the Dragons hopes today

The deadliest dragon of them all returns on the most important day in Australian history.

It is a day where many reflect on fallen heroes. It is a day where many start to appreciate what they have in the great southern land.

However for one individual it represents a chance to lead a famous rugby league team out of oblivion.

Mark Gasnier will make his comeback against the Sydney Roosters today amist all the injury concerns that have plagued him this season.

He alone has made this decision, not based on the nature of his injury, but purely the thought of what it means to the famous red "V".

His presence will lift everyone on his side. Just like the Last Post inspires all Australians to stand and thank all those that have gone before them.

Gasnier's reputation is on the line today and he was hell bent on not missing the most important regular season clash 2008 has to offer.

Despite being underdone for this clash, Gasnier still represents the most fundamental aspect of the Dragon's offensive capabilities.

He is by far and away their best player and even today he will be the Roosters most potent threat.

But Gasnier can not do this on his own. At the end of the day there are 12 other individuals that must stand and fight alongside their true leader.

If Gasnier is starved of possession today, the Dragons will suffer dire consequences.

As if their form was not bad enough, their opponents in the Roosters look to set to perform big time.

Their collapse against Newcastle will not go down as one of their best efforts and Fittler will be keen for the his team to show no mercy and play the game as if it were their last.

The Roosters have developed into a force this season. Last week they looked really flat and tired. Despite the short turnaround they will also seek pride on Australia's most signifiant day.

Braith Anasta will be looking to cement a spot in Australia's centenary test. He really needs to fire today.

If he does the score could be anything.

I still favour the Roosters in this clash but the return of Gasnier could prove to be the tonic for a Dragon's revival.

But if Gasnier is shutdown, their is always next week.
