Lightning strikes on Arana Taumata

February 3rd 2009 01:38

A massive cloud now hangs above Arana Taumata after the Melbourne Storm sacked the young five- eighth, putting another nail in his NRL career.

Tuamata was previously with the Canterbury Bulldogs where he displayed enough form to give him the inside running on the playmaking position at the club.

But after an off field misdemeanour which saw Taumata break a man’s jaw, the Bulldogs showed no hesitation in sacking the rising NRL star.

After the Newcastle Knights reportedly withdrew their bid to sign Taumata due to his off field issues, the Storm threw the young footballer a lifeline.

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy was looking very pleased with the way Taumata was conducting himself in a Storm line-up that is as professional as any in Rugby League.

Indeed Bellamy was even thinking of granting Taumata a starting position at the club, so Greg Inglis can assume his more dangerous role out in the centres.

But after another off field altercation, Taumata once again finds himself without a club after the Storm tore up his contract.

It is believed Taumata was having a night out with fellow Melbourne team-mates Wairangi
Koopu, Dane Nielsen and Will Chambers when a physical punch-up with another male surfaced.

While Koopu, Chambers and Nielsen escaped the sack, Taumata was never going to survive a Storm board that pride themselves in discipline.

Having already been sacked by the Sydney Roosters , the Brisbane Broncos and the Bulldogs in recent seasons, the Storm have followed suit against a player that simply cannot control his emotions off the paddock.

His misdemeanours have unfortunately clouded the unique potential that Taumata possesses as a League player.

In his few matches for the Bulldogs last season, Taumata had starring roles for Canterbury in matches against South Sydney and the Broncos.

It was his performance against Brisbane at Suncorp that really earned rave reviews, with many suggesting that Taumata was finally in it for the long haul.

But as is the case with young stars of the game, they more often than not take the law into their own hands without thinking about the consequences that may surface soon after.

Indeed Taumata has played with the law four times for zero wins and this time, his luck seems to have run out.
