NRL or Super League - Bird needs to move on quickly
December 2nd 2008 07:20
The Shire is a relatively peaceful place inhabited by Cronulla faithful who learn to forgive and forget pretty quickly.
Its what has kept the Sharks alive in the NRL competition despite never winning an NRL premiership in over 40 years of competition.
But even the shire folk can run out of patience with one of their favourites, even if it is Australian and NSW Origin player Greg Bird.
For all of his achievements on the field, Bird has done everything off it to destroy the positive stance he cast on the NRL, and the Sharks for that matter with misdemeanours that would make Shane Warne happy.
If he is not kneeing players, he is allegedly abusing women, and it seems Bird has not learnt his lesson.
Now he finds himself at the mercy of a Sharks board, led by Chief executive Tony Zappa, who are eager to see him depart from not only the Sharks, but the country as well.
Bird's future down under does not look good at all, with the Sharks wanting to terminate the remainder of his two year contract.
If things could not get any worse, Cronulla are now seeking assistance from the NRL to disallow Bird the chance to play for any other NRL club for next season and beyond.
With Cronulla's requests likely to be met, Bird's only option to resume a career on the brink is to head overseas to play in the English Super League.
A player that was literally on top of his game and behaviour eight months ago, Bird's career, and his love life for that matter, have capitulated into the abyss.
One cannot even begin to understand why he went off the rails the way he did.
Bird had everything in his sights in season 2008 and literally threw it all away for an unknown reason.
Although his reasons may be valid to some point, what can playing in the NRL for a Sharks team on a $350,000 a year contract do to make one go crazy?
Sure, injury has a lot to do with it and this may be the reason why Bird just lost control.
If one can cast their minds back to a Sharks home game against the Eels, Bird hurt his ankle and was in tears.
He was crying because he knew he would miss Origin 3 for NSW the following week.
When he was on the sidelines for a few weeks, Bird presumably broke his girlfriends jaw, and with it, his career as a footballer.
Bird really is a wreck at the moment, and one hopes that he finds a solution to his woes quickly for not just his sake, but for the sake of others around him.
