Roberts could fly out of chook pen

October 18th 2008 08:51

The global economic crisis could have unforeseen effects for one of the NRL's richest clubs with the Sydney Roosters admitting they too are struggling in the midst of the world's financial problems.

In order to combat their troubles, rumour has it Roosters winger Amos Roberts could be offloaded to the Engage Super League despite re-signing with the club for one more season.

UK club the Wigan Warriors is believed to be Roberts future destination, with the side offering the former Dally M winger a four year deal.

Amid the financial crisis, the Roosters might face salary cap pressure and could be forced to offload some of its players.

Even Roberts is confused with the current fiasco at Bondi Junction. But more often than not, rumours such as these have turned into reality.

"I haven't signed anything, I'm not too sure what's going on," Roberts said.

Having already offloaded Anthony Tupou to the Sharks and David Shillington to the Raiders, the Roosters have also been forced to combat strong news from Rugby League Week regarding the imminent departure of Anthony Minichiello to French League.

Both the Roosters and Minichiello have denied such a move.

Regardless of the rumours, the potential departure of Roberts would deprive the Roosters of try scoring potency out wide.

Indeed Roberts has come back strong after experiencing some lean years under then Roosters coach Chris Anderson.

His speed and versatility across the backline would be sorely missed by the chooks if he were to move on.

Despite the overcast conditions surrounding the game of rugby league in this country, the Roosters are better placed than most Sydney clubs to indeed prevail from this financial slumber.

With a board containing Wizard Finance chief executive Mark Bouris, Fremantle Media chief executive Mark Fennessy and David Jones boss Mark McInnes, the Roosters have the necessary personnel to lead them through these troubled times.

Indeed those troubled times nearly cost the Roosters their SG ball and Harold Matthews sides.

Both teams were originally cut as part of the club’s cost cutting procedures, brought about by the increased poker machine tax and the introduction of new smoking laws.

But through Easts Leagues club’s strong and continued financial support to the Easts junior league, the local junior league will oversee the Harold Mathews programme, thus continuing to participate in the junior representative competition wearing the Roosters famous tri-colours.
