Sonny Bill does a Bourne act

July 28th 2008 09:32
Can Sonny elude all that will be thrown at him?

Sonny Bill Williams is going to keep the engine running.

Pedal to the metal as he attempts to flee a five year contract with the Bulldogs worth $450,000 a year.

One thing is for certain. Williams is not coming back to Australia.

His face is now the focal point of every paper, magazine and television news bulletin. While we all sit like ducks wondering how this has happened, Williams is streaking across the globe faster than Jason Bourne himself.

He has hit the gas on a three million dollar contract to play in France. His presence from tonight’s Bulldogs - Dragons game will leave ANZ stadium blown of any spectators.

As if he was looking in a windshield for any suspicious person, the Kiwi on the run is eager to scram from a code that has raised the alarm due to his surprise departure. An alarm looking likely to bomb any possible route for Williams to play sport for the next five years.

NRL chief executive David Gallop called his move to France "an act of international piracy". Sure enough this could turn into one of those great police chases.

It will be a chase to prevent Sonny Bill receiving his illustrious stash from French club Toulon. It will be a chase worthy of putting the minds of Hollywood on notice. Williams is on the run and he must be stopped.

Sounds like a thriller.

As Williams sits on his plane chaffing on his promised millions, the Bulldogs sit with a mood capable of thieving everything that Sonny Bill holds dear.

While the purpose of his departure is yet to be realised, what can be worse than having the NRL on your tail, eager to beat you up after snatching over 2 million dollars from a club's purse?

The Bulldogs have been patiently waiting for Sonny Bill to solve his off field dramas. They gave him enough support to suggest a very bright future with the Canterbury club.

For a player to fly away from a contract and not pop the trunk on the reason for doing so is low.

Williams is now headed for a fight where he will have to counter every act of evidence against him. Evidence that is both a combination of disloyalty and lies.

Williams has jetted up towards a new page of a life filled with controversy, and in between, some terrific football.

But his ability to rev up the game of rugby league in such a bad way will no doubt cause Williams to hire all the security he can get with the three million dollars presumably in his pocket.

If he ever hits the street of Sydney again, best believe there will be many desperate to swerve their insults in Williams' direction.

For Sonny's sake, I hope the man has some tricks up those tattooed sleeves of his.

The heat that has been generated with his move to France will cause millions of fans to turn their backs on a player considered to be the best character in the NRL.

It is likely now his presence on the internet will irk all who live in the western suburbs of Belmore and Canterbury.

All this for 3 million dollars.

If there is one thing certain about Sonny Bill Williams, his life at the moment does not make any sense.

Fleeing from your problems only delays the pain that is to come. In no way does his life look on the verge of finding both solace and peace.

As the NRL contemplates its actions towards Williams' departure, he too will wonder how a man of his talents just began losing control.

There will be a rush of critics and lawyers alike trying to prevent the Kiwi from ever getting his hands on a football. Sonny Bill must find his identity soon as he prepares to fight a battle with more drama than 9/11.

All this for 3 million dollars. Jason Bourne would be proud.
